Smoldering Lake Moose Hunting

Moose are an iconic animal of the north country.   Maine has the highest densities of Canadian moose in North America, and a large portion of older age class animals, providing hunters with a terrific opportunity for success on mature bulls.  

Maine offers weapon of choice hunting seasons for bulls, during the rut when animals are mobile and vocal.  Cows seasons are post rut when moose are more focused on food.  

Smoldering Lake offer moose hunts from their lodge in WMD’s 6,3 and 5.  Smoldering Lake also offers remote camp and tent camp hunts in WMD’s 1,2,4,&5.   
 

S.L.O. clients hunt one on one with a guide.  Our staff are in constant communication in the field.  This is a 100% team effort.  A hot lunch will be prepared afield as hunt teams stay out all day.  Guides in the same district will often meet up for lunch.  This is a great time to compare notes and stories of the days events. 

Smoldering Lake’s Rut hunts for bulls are highly interactive.  Days are long and hunters can expect to do a lot of walking over various types of terrain.   That said, with our adaptive equipment and experience the Smoldering Lake team can tailor a hunt to fit any physical limitation. 

The thick nature of Maine’s boreal forest and responsiveness of bulls to calling, result in shot distances averaging under 40 yards. Hunting strategies during the moose rut are very similar to spring turkey or September elk hunting.
Unless otherwise specified the Smoldering Lake team target mature bulls over 5 years of age and 50” in spread.

Smoldering Lake cow moose hunts are largely spot and stalk or still hunting with occasional stand hunting.  The timing is post rut and moose are focused on later fall foods and as a result much less mobile.  With colder temperatures and more limited food sources moose may be active throughout the day.
